Eater Inside: Trading Post, a New Three-Floored Restaurant in the Seaport

It's about time there was a waterfront bar with an underground whiskey den

"While you can't swap a Bobby Bonilla for a Gregg Jefferies there (unless you go with some really cool people), Trading Post has something even better to offer: tons of rare whiskeys and towering plates of seafood in a three-floor landmarked building on the old Burling Slip (now John St), plus relief from the "wild Irish pubs" and "stuffy steakhouses" of the area."  //more

"Take a look around Trading Post, the huge American restaurant that just opened in the South Street Seaport. It's on John Street in the space that used to house Yankee Clipper and its OTB scene, with a hearty menu by Smith & Wollensky alum Stephen Woods.

Owned by four Seaport locals, the space is huge (10,000-square-feet, all told) and with plenty of dark wood, earth tones, and a light and airy third-floor dining room, it feels very ... seafaring, in a good way. It's currently open for lunch, dinner, and as of this past weekend, brunch." //more

Inside Trading Post, a Handsome New Arrival at the Seaport

"They outfitted the tri-level building, which was built in the 1840s and is one of the city's two remaining granite Greek revival buildings, with dark woods and club chairs, installing a private dining room with a waterfront view upstairs and a whiskey cellar with stone walls and intimate seating below ground. The setting, they hope, will become a restful oasis for neighbors looking to avoid the Financial District's raucous after-work bars."  //more

"The two main dining spaces are outfitted with custom-made leather seats and chairs, beautiful wallpaper and smooth wood moldings. On the main floor, a beautiful wooden clock greets guests, who then have the option to slide up to the 100-foot bar or seek refuge in one of the cozy nooks around the perimeter. Upstairs, an elegant dining room boasts views out onto the East River and a quieter eating atmosphere, while the underground cellar bar offers a dark, intimate atmosphere to sip one of the many whiskeys, beers and house cocktails."  //more

Off the Menu: Trading Post Opens after Sandy...

"...there is a bar and dining rooms on the ground floor; the Whiskey Cellar bar and lounge in the basement; and another dining room with a water view on the second floor, all graciously done in dark wood and wainscoting. The all-purpose contemporary menu, by Stephen Woods, who was with the Patina Restaurant Group for many years, offers a lobster roll, ceviche, roasted beets with goat cheese, and roast chicken." //more

Ten Cozy Subterranean Bars to Wait Out Winter

"The upstairs restaurant is lovely, but it's the dark, sexy, below ground bar that sings during this time of year. It's a great place to take advantage of the bar's sizable whiskey selection while you sit on one of the sleek leather chairs. They offer upscale pub grub down there too, like Flatbreads ($14) topped with sausage, broccoli rabe and garlic or spicy shrimp with tomatillo, avocado and cilantro.."  //more
